Our Journey to Medicine: The Doodys' Path to Fertility Care

Drs. Kathy and Kevin Doody started CARE Fertility together in 1989. Since then, they’ve helped thousands of couples make their dream of a family a reality.

But how did they get there? We sat down with both doctors to discuss their journey to CARE Fertility and when they realized that reproductive medicine was what they wanted to do.

Dr. Kevin

Dr. Kevin is always up for a good challenge -- and that’s exactly what appealed to him most about the field of fertility.

“Unlike other fields of medicine you really get to know whether or not what you're doing is working,” he said. “The outcome is, in a sense, a binary. Either you get pregnant or you don't.”

Though other areas of medicine can be harder to quantitate, Dr. Kevin finds that it’s more exciting getting to help patients have a child.

And as for when he made the decision to go into medicine, that came at a young age.

“I think it was around when I was ten or twelve that I realized I wanted to be a doctor,” he remembers. “I liked science a lot, but I liked people and I think that's what really got me off into the medical world. It's an opportunity to use science and to interact with people on a daily basis.”

Dr. Kathy

For Dr. Kathy, her realization came on the night of her first clinical rotation.

“I will never forget my very first clinical rotation in Houston,” she said. “My first day I was on call that night and I watched a lady deliver twins through caesarian section. It was the most amazing experience seeing her give birth. I immediately decided I was going to be an OB-GYN.”

Similar to her husband, Dr. Kathy always enjoyed interacting with patients. Having originally planned to focus on research, she soon realized that that wasn’t the best place for her.

“I really like being around people,” she states. “I enjoy that and I decided to go into medicine because of that.”

With their combined passion for patient care, Dr. Kevin and Dr. Kathy decided to open their own practice, CARE Fertility, in 1989.

“When we founded CARE Fertility in 1989, I was just finishing my fellowship and Kevin was in his first year of practice,” she recalls. “Back in those days there were not many options for fertility care in Tarrant County. We were the first reproductive endocrinologists to set up in this area. We were so excited to be able to help people here. We have been very lucky to have an amazing staff.  Many have been with us for fifteen or twenty years or more.  They are like family.”

The Dallas area may have changed over the years, but one thing has remained the same: both Drs. Doody are driven by a desire to help more patients create the family they’ve always dreamt of having.
